Ghawar in Amerika

Syria's most beloved comic character lands in New York — songs, satire, culture shock.

A comedy about arriving.

Ghawar in Amerika imagines the iconic Syrian comic character Ghawar el-Toshe immigrating to New York City in pursuit of his beloved Fattoum. What follows is a musical satire of the immigrant experience — visa lines and subway maps, culture shock and stubborn hope — told through live Arabic music and comedy. Underneath the laughter runs a story every diaspora audience recognizes: what we carry with us, and what a new city asks us to become.
